Discouraged…

I was really discouraged with one of my students this week. Why am I expected to teach my students to be honest, when at home they are being taught to lie?
Let me tell you what happened . . . My class participates in Pizza Hut’s Book It program. I require my students to read a certain number of minutes at home each month and log their time. After they read the required minutes, their parents are to sign their log sheet and send it to me. I give them their certificate for a free personal pan pizza. It is a great program. This Tuesday I had a students turn in her log sheet. She logged time for the entire month of February. Yes, the entire month. Each of the 28 days had time logged. This would be okay if it was not only the 18th of the month. But, what gets me is that mom had signed the log that she read the time she had logged. When I asked the student about it, her response was “but it is okay, mom signed it.” I had to explain to the student that she was being dishonest by logging time that she had not read. Then I had to explain that her mom was also being dishonest for signing the paper. I understand that times are tough and the pizza is a great way to be able to afford to take the kids out to eat, but lets be honest with how we get the pizza. I am trying to teach the students to be honest, hard working citizens. Some support from home in this would be great.
